WORKSHOP ON MAKING RADIO JINGLES

The Department of Media, Maharishi University of Information Technology, Noida, in coordination with IQAC conducted a lecture-cum-workshop on the ‘Making a Radio Jingle’. The programme started with ‘Guru Puja’ and lamp lighting.

Dr. Umesh C. Pathak was the Chief Guest and is the Head of the Department of Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies, Delhi, (Affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi). Addressing the students, he shared his experience and thoughts related to Jingle making. Explaining the importance of Radio Jingles, Tagline, he showed a few relevant ads of two decades.  He said Jingle was a lyrical musical ad-spot on a product and was often a commercial endeavour and added that it should be loaded with creativity and must be catchy.

Soon after he arrived at the campus, Dr. Pathak was introduced to Dean (Academics) Dr. Trapty Agarwal following a tete-e-tete in which he talked of his journey from a small city to the meaningful world of education pursuing his passion for academics. A man of multi-talents, Dr. Pathak thrilled the members of the staff particularly Dr. Trapty who was all ears to his interesting anecdotes regarding his love for music.  He said that the contents in Vedas and other holy scriptures formed the bases of Bhagwad Gita which had such a powerful message of the management of the entire life of a human being  that is relevant till today.

Interspersing his talk with mimicry of several celluloid stars including Amitabh Bachchan and radio presenter Amin Sayani, Dr. Pathak said that jingle making was a process of hardwork, creativity and was done within a time framework.

Continuing his lecture with students at the workshop, Dr. Pathak said that the jingles were the heartbeat of marketing campaigns, captivating audiences with catchy tunes and memorable lyrics. Crafting an effective jingle requires a blend of creativity, strategic thinking, and musical prowess. Here are some key points to consider when embarking on the journey of Jingle making.

Dr. Pathak said that understanding the brand or the product was very essential before diving into just lyrics.  It was essential to grasp the message that the product was supposed to convey and what kind of emotional message the jingle should evoke. If it was for the younger generation, “Har Dost zaruri hota hai’ could be the apt one while for a housewife undertaking the household chores, jingle ‘Nirma….Nirma washin powder Nirma….’ Could be the perfect one. He said that it was important was the jingle fwas talilor made and resonated with the target audience.

 

The workshop culminated with an interactive doubt-clearing session with the students. Those present among the staff and students of media department included Dr. Mudita Agarwal (Dean) and Mr. Gaurav Thakur, Faculty (SOC), Dr. Shambhoo Sharan Gupta (Deputy HOD), Associate Professor, Prof. Nitin Saxena, Dr. Mithilesh Kumar, Dr. Surmeet Singh, Mr Shivam Yadav, Mr Sunil Kumar Yadav, Mr. Arivind Singh and Mr. Mohan Singh Rawat.
